Cross posting because I’m mad.
I just posted this elsewhere, but I’m going to put it here, ‘cuz I’m completely frustrated with this underhanded bullshit.
The UBP put out a rather… well… it wasn’t the best thing I’ve ever seen.
Most of you have seen it. The fish thing.
There’s tonnes wrong with it, from a writing standpoint, an artistic standpoint and an animation standpoint. This, of course, is just my opinion.
It’s not horrible, and you can see where they were trying to go with it, but it misses the mark.
But, as ridiculous as it is, this is even worse.
Check out the response on the official PLP blog!
“Have you seen the UBP’s ridiculous new fish animation? Even pro-UBP bloggers are lampooning the ad. One of them [with a link to Limey in Bermuda] said, “It’s not funny, or clever. It’s mindless.”
It’s not only mindless. It’s also brimming with race-based allusion.
Listen carefully to the voice of the green, yellow and white fish. It’s very Amos ‘n’ Andy. These kind of stereotypical portrayals have no place in our society and shows just how out-of-touch the UBP is.
If this is how they conduct their campaign, imagine how they are going to run government. Someone clearly thought that spending money to create an animation chock full of racial stereotypes was a good idea. If this is the way they run their campaign, imagine what kind of schemes those people are going to spend taxpayer money on.
You have GOT to be kidding me!
Both voices are quite obviously white, based on tone and timbre. One sounds like a REALLY bad cartoon character from Brooklyn, the other sounds like a redneck. Not sure why they went with those two accents, but that’s another matter.
If they are trying to imply that the “Bigger one with the deeper voice/Smaller one with the high pitched voice” comedy duo concept is Amos ‘n’ Andy-esque, they’re going to have a battle, as they’re going to have to also denounce:
Laurel & Hardy
Abbot & Costello
The Honeymooners (Including the latest incarnation with Mike Epps and Cedric the Entertainer)
Sonny and Cher
Cheech & Chong
Bing Crosby & Bob Hope (Although, they were reversed)
The Two Ronnies
Pete and Dud
Kenan & Kel
Fry & Laurie
Ernie & Bert
Bullwinkle & Rocky
David Spade & Chris Farley
Flanders & Swann
Good lord. The history of comedy is made up of this kind of double act.
Are they going to call all of them racist?
Why stoop to this tactic? How is that helping Bermuda?
“Why stoop to this tactic?”
Because the PLP are determined to accuse the UBP of racism whenever they can during this election. It’s a great tactic because it stifles debate on the serious issues that they would rather the voting public forgot all about. What is more, the UBP can’t protest against such tactics without sounding….well, racist!
I personally believe that stirring up a racial tension for short term political gain is despicable.
