Congratulations to the PLP
Proof that the Party is still strong.
Now, I just pray that we can all move forward and come together as one Bermuda and that all the lies and racist screaming can stop.
Please?

Ditto Mike. But are WE … ie. White Bermudians … still welcome in our own country?
What do we do now? We can’t join the PLP.
I am REALLY depressed about my family’s future here.
I’ve been pondering and thinking and trying to process.
My feelings are that… well… the PLP aren’t going anywhere.
So we have two choices:
1) Oppose them at every turn
2) Try to make this work
I know it’s pie in the sky, but I think we need to start supporting those in the party that DO embody the core beliefs of the PLP. The ones we all believe in.
We’ve got 5 years. That should be taken for granted.
We’ve been doing “Us vs. Them” for so long that we’ve forgotten that the goal is to come together.
Well, I think we can all safely say that, unless something drastic happens, the PLP will be the Government party for a while.
I’m not saying join up. I’m not saying support the party. But something’s gotta give.
I’m man enough to say, “Ok, you guys won. Now… where do we go from here? How can I help?”
…and pray for an answer.
Wookie, why can’t you join the PLP? Are you banned from the party, or just some right wing chap who thinks George Bush is god. I hope it’s not just that you’re white. Zane DeSilva is white, so is Jane Correia and Jonathan Starling, so was David Allen and Barbra Ball.
So maybe it’s because the PLP don’t go out of their way to appeal to you? Like the way all the old white clubs went out of their way to attract black members, I’m sure the royal Bermuda yacht club actively recruited black members… or maybe not. Sure the UBP did, but it had to in order to stand any chance of winning an election.
Understand, the PLP was founded by the people who fought for equal rights, so of course it’s going to be pro black. And the only way it is going to change is if more white people join and turn it from a black party to a centre left/socialist political party.
You don’t change a successful party by voting against it, you change it by joining it.
Elvis, you always appear to be a bit left in your politics, why not start the ball rolling by heading down to Alaska Hall and signing up? And who knows, by the time the next election comes around we might have a battle between left and right rather than black and white.
YAL
First off, welcome YAL! Glad to have you here.
Now, to answer your question…
The reason that I won’t be joining the PLP is the same reason I never joined the UBP. I don’t think either party represents my personal interests.
However, as I said, I will be rolling up my sleeves and asking “How can I help.”
Maybe I’m just frazzled by all the tension, maybe I’m just trying to see a bright side, but I’m just sick of the fighting. I’m sick of always being on the defensive.
It’s time to step up, I think, and do something. Take the steps necessary.
Thanks for the Welcome, and sorry for the late reply, unfortunately I don’t get to check the blogs as much as I used to back in Limey’s heyday (which was about twice a minute). These day’s I get about one minute every other week!
I have to respect your stand not to join either party, if it wasn’t for floating voters democracy just wouldn’t work at all.
I just get pissed off with white people going on about how the PLP never tries to appeal to them. It’s the old chicken and egg, white people don’t join because the PLP dosn’t appeal to them, and the PLP dosn’t attempt to appeal to white people because they never join. It would be nice if something gave, and until the PLP loses an election it’s unlikely to be them that change.
PS Keep up the good work on the site, and don’t let it get too political, that’s been the ruin of too many blogs. Poor Limey appears to have gone from a happy go lucky expat exploring his new home, to a full on, frothing at the mouth, UBP supporter. And Mr Starling and Pitcher write so much my tiny attention span gives up after the first paragraph or so.
One of the things that I’ve learned about the whole “The PLP doesn’t appeal to white folks” thing is that the two parties have totally different methods, so you can’t really compare… and when you do, everything goes wonky.
If we’re being honest, most white folks were brought up (some of us dragged up!) more or less in the UBP. We’re used to their method and that method is to actively recruit members. They go out of their way to get folks to join.
The PLP do NOT have an active recruitment policy. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, but I think one of the factors in white folks not joining is that… well… we’re used to the way the UBP does it, y’know? We expect this “HEY! Join us! We really want you!” vibe. That’s just not how the PLP does it.
Having said that, they may want to take a peek at changing it.
“Frothing at the mouth”?
